Major booksellers from Amazon to Barnes and Noble let you browse through a book’s early chapters before making a purchase. This preview is usually limited to the first 5% of a book. Once you reach the end of the sample, a purchase link pops up for the rest of the book.
Previewing early chapters is a useful method of window shopping. Readers can get a taste or feel for a story before committing to buying a particular book.
That’s one reason why a novel’s early chapters are so critical for an author. You want to hook a reader into a story within the first few pages. Spark their curiosity and fuel their desire to see where the narrative goes.
Where am I going with all of this?
Readers of my Strange New Worlds newsletter can look forward to a new early chapters series in upcoming editions of this newsletter over the rest of 2024 and in 2025. I’ll take free chapters you would typically see in an Amazon preview and include each one in future newsletters — one chapter at a time and one book at a time.
I want to give you a taste for my six published full-length novels. These are stories I’m convinced you will love, and I hope you’ll read and share those future newsletters that will form a part of this early chapters series.
I’m not including my novellas and short stories published through Samak Press in this project because Snow Dragon and Hiding From Shadows are already published as complete serials in past editions in my newsletter. But this also leads into a second announcement.
I will serialize Hollow Planet and In Hell’s Shadow in future editions of the Strange New Worlds newsletter in 2025. The first chapter of each story will be sent out free to all subscribers. The remaining chapters will be available to paid subscribers, matching the preview offerings from Amazon and other booksellers.
I’ve included a reader poll to learn which novel you’d like to see in the upcoming early chapters series first. Cast your vote. It will be the most important one you cast in 2024.
