Your MM post just reminded me I meant to comment on this, John
Really enjoyed this creepy little story which proves, once and for all, that if you mess around with the macabre, then the joke will always, inevitably end up on you. The idea of the doppelgänger taking over the body was a really nice way to end it too 👍🏼
A great story for a cold dark bedroom, after sunset, and with the quiet background music of Mozart's Requiem. I liked the ending/explanation especially well. Joyfully chilling.
Thank you, Sam. I'm happy you enjoyed the story and the ending.
I wanted to convey a sense of hopelessness at the end, as well as a foreboding fear in the reader's mind. (What does the doppelganger intend to do next?)
Oh, this DID NOT go where I thought it would 😱
That fun little twist ending came to me as soon as I started thinking about the portraits.

Our main character learned the old cliche the hard way: You mess with the bull, you get the horns.
