Not going to lie, its interesting to hear that the skull/head is the focal item in the west while in the east, itβs hair.
Of course this is not a whole generalization but rather some neat to notice of what is deemed integral in spooky tales. You donβt hear about gyrating hip bones or even neck bones being focal items lol its just not as cool as the head, hands, or a femur lol
Yes, have you seen them before? If not, I encourage you to look up a quick Youtube video. They are up there in the most terrifying sounds I have ever heard. I can't imagine dozens of them being blown as the enemies tribe comes down on you. They also used it to evoke spirits in their culture. It is said to sound like the screaming agony of thousands of corpses.
It is absolutely what I would expect a shrieking skull to sound like though.
A skull lies at the heart of a weird fiction horror tale called Adelbrand's Skull by Alvin Johnson in his short story collection, The Battle of the Wild Turkey and other tales. It's the only supernatural story in the collection; a historical novelette-length piece set in Denmark. It has an almost Edgar Allan Poe / H.P. Lovecraft vibe to it. A lost gem. And worth the $25 you'd have to pay for it for one of the only two remaining copies seen on eBay. β‘πβ‘
I'm intrigued by Adelbrand's Skull. I usually enjoy stories with Poe and Lovecraft vibes. Those are two masters of horror (as evidenced by all the imitators they spawned).
I hope you like it if you get a chance to read it. Alvin Johnson's all but unknown these days but he put his mark on the world in more ways than one. His one supernatural tale is worth passing on to those who may appreciate it.
Note to self: If I ever find a skull in a house. Leave it.
That's definitely a rule not meant to be broken.
Nice! I like that the first skull turned out to have an even more interesting story than anyone expected... not just spooky but ancient!
It was a nice twist. π
SCREAMING SKULLS FTW!!

Now I want to see a story about an evil neck. Returns to get revenge for getting hung from a noose. Or something odd like that.
Oh!!! A neck that comes back to wrap itself around the person that ordered their hanging, wrapping like a noose!
It would be totally surreal.
Yikes. I couldn't help but imagine the screaming skulls would sound like the Aztec death whistle. Haunting.
Aztec death whistle? That would be extremely haunting. I'd get as far away from that skull as I could at that point.

I LOVE creepy stories. I would almost pay to come across a skull that actually π± π€£
I'd like having a screaming skull as long as it had an on/off switch. 3 am screams and moans would grow old really fast. π

Great post. Really enjoyed that.
Speaking of cool skull stories...
