I completely agree, I need to plan. I'm happy for charaters to take me off in another direction but I need to have that plan first. A security blanket, I guess
I think that's the key. Character driven stories work best when you've made yourself familiar enough with your characters before writing the first draft that you instinctively know how they'll act and react in any given situation.
