That sounds like a very cool idea and the theme especially is one I've written a lot of stories about. If I'm honest it may even be my favourite theme in SF.

I've looked at your submissions page, but here is a question for you - what if it's been previously published here on Substack? If you wanted to include it in the anthology then I guess I could either remove it or make it paid-only. Unless it also served for anthology promo purposes...

I'm thinking this one: https://inadifferentplace.substack.com/p/xf?r=2s9hod

If a story is already published here on Substack, it would not be accepted. The reason I can't do any reprints has a lot to do with Amazon. They are quick to hassle indie authors and indie presses over copyright issues if the author or press publishes anthologies that include stories from other authors which have appeared elsewhere. I want to avoid that thorny mess altogether, which is why the call for submissions is for original unpublished stories only.

Ok - that’s a really clear answer and solves a lot of issues! Good excuse to think up another story, then…

Crud, and my first post here, Tertia, would have been perfect for this!!! Oh well, it had been on reedsy before anyway so it wasn't technically unpublished.

No worries. The submission window is open until the end of the month if you come up with another story. If not, there will be future anthologies published by Samak Press.

I’m wondering if you accept first chapters?

The anthology will only feature complete short stories relevant to the anthology theme. 1,500 to 7,500 words.

Hmm, maybe I could cut it down to 7500 words. It would be but an exerpt of the story, but maybe I could make a ‘short story’ out of part of it.

Sigh. I have a hard time limiting myself to a short story. It’s a fun story though:)

That's happened to me with a few stories. My novella Hollow Planet and my novel Under a Fallen Sun both started out as short stories and just kept growing from there.

That’s so cool! I’m writing a first contact story as we speak (type?) but it’s part of my novel that I serialize here on Substack… Maybe another time!

Thanks!

There will be other Samak Press anthologies down the road, so no worries. You'll have a chance to submit to future ones. 😊

I'm looking forward. I don't think I have two first contact stories in one month in me. ;)

I didn't see the call out for submissions for the horror one- Feral Land. I take it the deadline has passed for that one?

Yeah. That one was announced back in September and stayed open through the end of October. I may reopen it briefly if I find I need a broader pool of stories, but there will also be other horror anthologies down the road.

Thanks. Will definitely keep my eyes open for that.

excellent link... now im just thinking i need to sometimes not spaff everything immediately on substack because it usually cuts me out of other interesting stuff like this...

Yes, there's your Substack stuff and then the 'secret submissions' stuff. But if a piece doesn't make the grade for an exclusive-contracted anthology (via submission or competition) then it can still appear later on your Substack.
