I had no idea there was a petrified forest in Utah and it was also supposed to be bad luck! I lived in AZ for a while and I loved the Petrified Forest but just assumed the curse was to keep thieves at bay. But, hey, but better safe than sorry! (same reason you never rob a mummy ;-)
This definitely falls in line with the folklore surrounding mummies. I've never associated stealing petrified wood with bad luck until reading these urban legends. Now it's up there with breaking mirrors and walking under ladders. :-)
The story sounded soo familiar but a little off. It wasn’t until you mentioned a similar curse attached to another petrified forest located in Arizona that everything clicked into place. I’m an Arizonan. I’ve heard the tales about the forest in my state, didn’t realize there was one in Utah as well with the same tales of bad luck!
It's really interesting how many parallels there are between the Arizona legend and the Utah legend. The biggest one that stood out to me were the letters from people returning stolen petrified wood in an attempt to purge bad luck from their lives. That's one of the hallmarks of an enduring urban legend. The legend can adapt to different times and places while maintaining the core essence of the story.
There was a horror movie that has a similar theme, but it involved taking rocks I think it was, from the Grand Canyon. (Not sure which rim.) The movie is called The Darkness. Stars Kevin Bacon and Radha Mitchell. I really enjoyed it.
I hadn’t heard of the movie before surprisingly. I watch a lot of the supernatural/horror genres. Picked it up for a buck at a yardsale. Was very pleased with my purchase LOL.
Yard sales have hidden gems sometimes. A former girlfriend and I used to find all sorts of interesting stuff at yard sales when we'd go several years ago.

That sounds like an interesting premise. I'll have to check it out.

You’ll never run out of story ideas living here, I guess.
Indeed. It's a great environment for a creative mind. :)
So crazy! I had no idea.
I just learned about it a few days ago. Utah has so many unusual bits of folklore and urban legends. It's fun discovering these stories.
