Shock enveloped every inch of Ellen's face. She had not moved from her seat on the bottom stair for at least an hour. Maybe longer. Her eyes kept trailing down the length of the rope to those dangling, unmoving limbs and back up again.

Ray planned this for an entire year. Ellen’s worst fears had come true. Her nightly vigil made no difference in stopping the inevitable.

He got his revenge.
