PART THREE
Ellen’s heart sank when she glimpsed at the sun already hanging low and retreating across the western sky. Orange and yellow hues painted scattered clouds. Darkness lurked around the corner.
A frog croaked from a distant bank on the bayou. Some crickets took that as a cue to resume their usual serenade of chirps. Ellen cracked open the back door and stepped out onto the back porch. Hinges squeaked as the screen door slammed shut behind her. She wrapped a loose shawl around her shoulders and draped it over her long-sleeved crimson blouse. Locks of her deep brown hair rested atop the shawl.
Ellen planted herself in her usual spot. She leaned forward in the rocking chair. A shiver rippled through her body. Strands of her hair brushed against her cheeks. An autumn breeze permeated Ellen’s exposed face and hands. Still, cool air was not the lone culprit behind the trembling. Ray lurked out here somewhere, watching her and seizing on a moment of inattention to strike.
She would deny him that moment.
