Strings of multicolored Christmas lights decorated every house and tree down to the end of the block. Casey admired the intricate displays on both sides of the street. Families throughout Christina’s neighborhood embraced the holiday spirit with tangible enthusiasm.

His hand clutched a wrapped gift. A bright red ribbon circled the wrapping paper. Casey glanced down at the gift and smiled. He left several wads of mangled wrapping paper in his wake, but his folding and taping eventually turned out as nice as he hoped.

Instrumental strains of O Holy Night pierced the usual winter silence as Casey approached the front door. The music floated over from a life-sized nativity display in a neighboring front yard. Icy breaths escaped his lips with each step up the driveway. Casey cleared his throat when he reached the front porch and pressed the doorbell.

Christina opened the oak door a moment later, greeting him with a warm smile. He mirrored her cheerful expression with one of his own.

“Merry Christmas!” Casey thrust his hand forward. “I brought you a little gift.”
