Casey’s phone buzzed in his hand while he silently debated whether to swipe the screen and answer the call. Angry words he expected to hear from his mom swarmed his mind like irritated wasps. Talking to her would only confirm how pissed his parents were at him. Casey was supposed to be their good child. The one who didn’t break every rule in their rulebook at the first opportunity. The one who never caused sleepless nights.

One act squandered a bunch of hard-earned trust.

He dragged his teeth across his lower lip, took a deep breath, and finally accepted his fate.

“Where are you?” Predictable anger flooded his mom’s voice. “Did you go to the library after I told you not to go? You are in a world of trouble, mister.”

Casey gulped and paused at the main library door. Visions of his impending punishment swirled inside his head. His Mom always found a way to deny Matt or Hannah the things they enjoyed the most when they got in trouble. What awaited him? No more comic books? No more video games?

He shuddered thinking about what lay ahead. Still, he thought he made the right choice by keeping his commitment with Christina — even if it turned out poorly in the end.

“It didn’t feel right to take off without saying goodbye to Christina,” Casey said. “You don’t know the hell she’s endured at school.”
