Stealing glances at the clock did Marie no favors. She silently wished she possessed an ability to telepathically force her husband to return home faster. Watching minutes tick away while leaning against the kitchen island only heightened her worries. Ever since Casey’s narrow escape from the snow dragon’s clutches, Marie’s thoughts defaulted to visions of a giant reptile stalking her son or husband whenever she didn’t see or hear from them right away.

Evan promised he’d be home in a few minutes. Why wasn’t he here yet?

A persistent buzz sent vibrations through the island. Marie’s eyes trailed over to her smartphone. Evan’s name and number appeared on the screen. Relief washed over her like a cool wave. She ripped the phone from the counter and swiped the screen.

“Where are you?” She tried to hide her fear from her voice. “I thought you’d be home by now.”

“Might be a while before I get there. Just fix dinner for yourself and Casey.”

Marie sensed a shaky, rushed tone in his words.

“What happened to you?”

An uncomfortable silence greeted her question.

“Talk to me, babe. What’s going on?”
