Casey scowled and stared at his locked bedroom door. His parents weren’t being fair. End of story. For once, he finally found someone who did not bully him, tease him, or ignore him. Someone who had a real chance to become a real friend.
They were jeopardizing all of that.
Hannah used to insist asking for forgiveness was better than asking for permission. Casey always figured his sister adopted this saying as a lame justification for rolling in from parties long past midnight. Now he saw wisdom in her words.
Parents were so unreasonable at the worst times.
“You can’t study with her at the library,” Marie said. “Not with everything going on around here.”
Casey stared at his mom like a puppy smarting from a clumsy human stepping on its tail. Did she remember being a teen? Of course not! She was always an adult.
If he blew off his second study session with Christina, he’d get a bad grade on their project. Worse yet, she’d resent him for making her do all the work. Casey would be lucky if Christina ever spoke to him again. Getting her to talk in the first place wasn’t easy.
“You can’t do this to me!” Casey’s voice climbed higher while protesting her decision. “Christina will get upset at me. We’re assigned to work on this project together.”
What was he supposed to tell her?
Christina had not seen the monster as far as he knew. Telling her what happened to him – and his parents – would only make her think he was making up lies to avoid working on their project. For all the persistent rumors of Christina being a witch, he had not seen any evidence of her using magic or showing interest in the supernatural.
“No sense worrying about your project,” Marie said, cutting through his thoughts. “Your dad and I are pulling you out of school starting Monday.”
